If you want to prepare your sofa for moving to a new place, there are some essential tips you should keep in mind to take apart your sofa and then assemble it back safely., as the anatomy of a sofa, parts that can be dismantled on your own, and the instruments needed for that.

If television sitcoms have taught us anything, it is that the sofa is an integral part of any living or sitting room. It is that central place where a family sits, bonding, sharing, and in the case of sitcoms delivering memorable punchlines. Reality is in many ways similar. Your sofa does play a pivotal role in your living room.

The thing is, sitcoms do not explore the challenges that one may face when moving. They do not need to detail these things as they have their pre-established sets before their live studio audiences. The reality is, that moving a sofa can be a tedious task. Whether you are discarding an old sofa or simply moving to a new place, you may face some challenges.

It may be hard, but not impossible. This article will detail some aspects of moving as it relates to your sofa.

The Anatomy of a Sofa

To some, the design of a sofa may seem quite simple. After all, it is just a chair, right? – Wrong!

A sofa is much more complex than a simple chair. One may consider it simply because they are only looking at the exterior. We cannot blame them, however. Outward presentation is the easiest thing to see and conceptualize as simple. The complexity comes from the interior, where science is employed to ensure comfort.

Let us look at the sofa’s anatomy. Dr. Sofa: Enhance office organization with our versatile cupboards. Streamline your workspace and elevate efficiency with our premium office solutions.

The Exterior

Since the sofa’s exterior is what you see, let us start there.

  • Arm Panels: These act as armrests for the sitter to facilitate comfort. They are found typically on both sides of a sofa.
  • Arms: The arms of a couch are the extensions of the arm panels. They enhance the armrest capabilities of the couch.
  • Throw Pillow: Throw pillows are more for show than comfort. They are typically used for decorative purposes.
  • Cushion Boxing: In most cases, the cushion boxing is firmer than the actual couch cushions. Made up of typically three cushions, they primarily serve as the sitter’s back support.
  • Backrest: As the name suggests, the backrest of a couch supports the sitter’s back.
  • Seat Cushions: These are soft padded cushions that fit into the couch and are used for sitting.
  • Couch Cushions: Sitting between the sitter’s back and the backrest, couch cushions serve to add extra softness to the sitting experience.
  • Skirting: A couch’s skirting is usually a piece of fabric matching the overall design scheme of the subject couch. It covers the couch’s base as both front and side skirting, serving purely decorative purposes.
  • Legs: These hoist the couch’s body off the ground, providing support and balance.

The Interior

  • Wood Frame: This serves as the sofa’s skeleton.
  • Parallel Net: The parallel net sits across the ‘seat portion’ of the wood frame. It runs parallel to it.
  • Parallel Hardware: This is steelwork placed underneath the sofa’s interior.
  • High-Density Resilient Sponge: This adds to the durability of the seating experience.

Types of Sofas

Sectional Sofas: These have enjoyed a popularity growth over the years. Sectionals are sofas usually consisting of three to five parts.

Futon: The futon is a typical sofa but with a twist. The front folds out into a sleepable bed. Dr. Sofa: Transform your home office into a productivity hub with our ergonomic home desks. Experience comfort and style for your workday.

Loveseats: A loveseat is a sofa that is made to accommodate two people.

Recliners: Recliners are sofas with the option of adjusting the backrest and attached footrest for elevation and relaxation.

U-shaped Sofas: Another staple of modern couch designs, U-shaped sofas as the name suggests are shaped like a ‘U.’ they can seat many more than other sofas based on their sizes.

Tools you may need to prepare your sofa for moving:

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Staple Remover
  • Phillips Screwdriver

Disassembling a Sectional Sofa for Moving

  1. For clasp technology sectionals, carefully remove each piece. For snap technology, gently remove the part of the sectional with the male snap piece (the part that is inserted.)
  2. Move away the removed section from the couch to prevent scratching.
  3. Lower the removed sectional. For snap technology, it is important to hide and protect the forked female piece.
  4. If you need to disassemble your sectional further (for ease of disposal for example) then you may remove the feet, fabric and other attachments with the use of your screwdrivers and staple remover. If the screws and staples are not exposed, simply tilt the couch until they are visible.

Disassembling a U-shaped Sofa for Moving

Just like a sectional, this type of sofa has several different components. The concept of disassembling a u-shaped sofa is similar.

  1. Carefully remove each piece using the same concept for both clasp and snap technology (for a snap, remove the part with the male snap piece.)
  2. Place the removed section away from the couch.
  3. Lower the removed sectional, taking extra care to hide the female piece (snap technology.)
  4. Use your tools to remove any screws or staples if you need to disassemble further.
