Just because you have less space, doesn’t necessarily mean you need fewer things from your apartment. You still need the space to function as an eating, sleeping, relaxing, entertaining and learning area for you. Before you call the nyc furniture movers, you need to understand how to downsize into a studio – by transforming your space!

Visually Separate Your Space

If you want your apartment to serve multiple functions, you need to visually separate the space. Even if there are four walls in the whole apartment, you need to utilize dividers, furniture or curtains to separate your spaces so that you don’t end up sleeping in the same room that you watch TV or eat dinner. You’ll be happier with the space if it functions the way you want it to, and you’ll wind up with more storage space, more usable wall space and designated walkways in your apartment.

Form and Function for Decoration

Before you get started hanging all your favorite pictures, consider this: you have a limited amount of wall space, so the items you do use to decorate need to work harder for you. For example, if you have a lot of jewelry taking up space on your bathroom counter, hang it on the wall! It will look visually intriguing and it’s much easier to find the piece you want to wear immediately.

Choose Smaller Furniture

You have a smaller space, you will need smaller furniture. Rather than a couch, consider a love seat. Rather than a kitchen table and four chairs, consider stools at your kitchen counter. Skip the nightstand and use a low-level dresser. In many cases, you may need custom furniture for your space, if you want to have storage that fits your small apartment.

Hang lights

This one may seem obvious, but if you have limited space on the ground or on your tables, you need to utilize the ceiling and wall space for your lights. The best option is to hang them from the ceiling where they will adequately light the entire room without using precious space on the walls that you should be using for storage and décor.

Choose Furniture that Doubles as Storage Space

When you live in a small space, you need more storage. When you need more storage, you run out of room for your other furniture. Why not solve the problem by getting furniture that stores what you need it to? Consider investing in a trunk or an ottoman for your coffee table, where you can hide towels or sheets. Get a bed frame with drawers underneath.

You may need to hire someone to disassemble furniture for moving it into your studio apartment, but at least now you know how to make that space work for you once you’re all moved in! Good luck and happy decorating!
