According to The Humane Society, more than half of all U.S. households include at least one pet. That’s a lot of dogs and cats! And they all need a place to sleep, especially if they live indoors. Many pet owners buy a good bit more than just a dog couch or a kitty bed, however.
Custom pet furniture is becoming the rage, with lots of clever and sometimes even beautiful accent pieces doing double duty as a bookshelf/cat perch, or ceiling sculpture/aquarium. Some custom furniture pieces are so cleverly designed that it isn’t immediately apparent that they are, in fact, pet beds – couch units with a side compartment for Fido, or hollow side tables with a cat door facing away from the couch.
Custom Cat Furniture
Cats are famous for the fact that they love to be indulged, so there are lots of custom pieces that are perfect for that exact purpose. These can include tiny kitty beds that look just like your own bed, only smaller; exciting cat runs over the tops of doors and window frames; and kitty hammocks that can be hung from just about anything, including chair or table legs. You can buy custom cat towers and trees, complete with cushions and scratching posts. If you invest in custom furniture for your cat, don’t forget that last part. If kitty has her own place to sharpen her claws, she’ll be less likely to claw up your furniture. In fact, if you have an indoor pet, it’s a wise idea generally to protect your own furniture with some form of fabric protection.
Custom Dog Furniture
If your dog wants to be close to you, but you don’t want him in your lap or on your bed 24/7, you can get custom furniture that gives Fido his own space, but still allows him to feel close to you. You can buy custom-made dog couches to match the look of your own sofa. You can also give your dog his own bed at the foot of your own – a quilt chest/dog bed complete with a fluffy pad and steps for easy access. Of course, if you give Fido his own couch or bed, you’ll want to give it the benefit of fabric cleaning – you have to live there too!
Some pet owners take their home aquariums to the level of an art form. Wall insert aquariums, bookcase or table aquariums, aquariums mounted into cabinets and aquarium headboards are not only possible, but are some of the more sedate choices. Some luxury homes even have aquariums the size of whole walls – ceiling to floor – to create the illusion that the house is sitting on the ocean floor.
You might not have the money to turn your home into a theme park for your pet, but a few pieces of clever custom pet furniture can give your pet a nice place to relax. And they may have the “side” benefit of helping you protect your own sofa or couch!
